Cheese lovers everywhere are counting
down the days to the granddaddy of all cheese festivals –
Green County Cheese Days on September 17 – 19, 2010.
Said to be the oldest food fest in the Midwest, this grand
celebration of cheese has been held on the historic courthouse
square in downtown Monroe, Wisconsin since 1914.
Melted, grilled, cubed, sliced, crumbled, deep-fried, or
with a local brew on the side – festival goers will
find cheese in many different ways. They can also meet cheesemakers,
sample cheese, and buy cheese in the Cheese Tent, where thousands
of pounds are sold over the weekend.
One of the most popular food booths at the festival is the
Monroe Optimist Fried Cheese. Made with large cubes of young
Cheddar from the nearby Maple Leaf Cheese Cooperative, these
little nuggets of heaven are hand-coated in a secret recipe
batter and served up straight from the deep fryer.
Green County, an area lauded as the epicenter of Wisconsin
cheese making, is home to 13 cheese plants and more Wisconsin
Master Cheesemakers than anywhere else in the state.
Of course quality milk is necessary to produce quality cheese,
and Green County’s dairy farmers are part of the award-winning
combination. Meet some members of their happy dairy herds
when friendly bovines make the big trip downtown for an old-fashioned
Cow Milking Contest on Saturday during the festival.
Also taking place Saturday afternoon is the Old Time Cheesemaking
Demonstration, with veteran cheesemakers creating a giant
wheel of Swiss cheese from start to finish in an antique copper
kettle on the Green County Courthouse lawn.
